HENRY CLINTON
(1738 - 1795) English major general who succeeded Howe as commander in chief in North America, captured Charleston in 1780 and resigned his post following a quarrel with Cornwallis. War-date partly-printed D.S., ‘H. Clinton', 1p. legal folio, New York, Apr. 18, 1781, a pay order for subsistence covering a period of two months, issued to convalescents of the 82nd Regiment of Foot who were left in New York. Loosely mounted to another sheet and unevenly toned, near fine. The 82nd Regiment of Foot was raised in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 16 December 1777. First sent in May 1779 to establish and defend New Ireland, a Crown colony in modern-day Maine, a base of operations for both the British military and loyalists. Ultimately, causing a great defeat for the Colonials there, they were then sent to New York in August. Later in April 1781, they were sent to Wilmington, North Carolina After the surrender at Yorktown, and its light company was interned there.
