HENRY CLAY
(1777-1852) American politician, the "Great Pacificator" who supported the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 which sought to avoid a Civil War on the issue of states' rights and slavery. A.L.S. 1p. 4 1/8" X 6 5/8", Washington, Jan. 24, 1850 to a lady. In part: "...I rec'd your kind invitation to your evening reception. I should go to some of them, with pleasure, if I did not feel restrained from going out at night, during the Winter, by considerations connected with my health. I have thought it right thus to explain the cause of my absence...". A few toned spots, else very good.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry.
