HENRY A. WISE
(1806 - 1876) Confederate brigadier general and Governor of Virginia who sent John Brown to the gallows. He died never accepting amnesty. Five days after the First Battle of Petersburg in which Colston''s rag-tag Home Guard had held off a concerted Union attack until relieved, Wise congratulates his comrade-in-arms. In part: "...my thanks for the efficient and gallant part you bore in the affair on the 9th. You tendered your services on the field, in any duty...and I placed you in command on the right.relying on your experience and skill to guide the militia...in supplying their want of discipline, and that their confidence would be increased, as it was, by your presence and example...you held the militia, as long as regulars and veterans could have been held...saving the retreat, after having seized a musket, and fired upon the enemy with your own hand, and after two men had been shot from the sadlle of your own horse...you shared their danger to the last, and doubtless taught them how to win glory...". The Home Guard, a group consisting primarily of teenagers, elderly men, and some wounded soldiers from city hospitals, took heavy losses, but held off the attack until relieved by Beauregard.
