Description:

528. ERNEST HEMINGWAY Superb content T.L.S. "Ernest Hemingway" signed in pencil, 1p. 4to., Finca Vigia, Cuba, Dec. 28, 1951 to noted author and columnist Jim Bishop, then writing a biography of Hemingway's friend, writer-producer Mark Hellinger. In part: "...I last saw Mark in Sun Valley shortly before he died. He had been through a heart attack in New York...We talked business and fun and he wanted to gamble. It was between the seasons at Ketchum where the gambling was ...I told him I did not think he could get an honest game the way things were and advised him very strongly not to gamble....he and I were the only people playing except for the shills...it was time to go to bed and he wanted to gamble again. I did not want him to go out as it was a raw bad night and there was no place open...he promised to stay out a short time...The next morning I learned he had lost a considerable sum...There are people who say he was given bad liquor...I only know that he was drinking and gambling when he should not have done either and it was impossible to control him unless he was put under restraint...We tried to control and failed...In the intervals between these moments he was kind, delicate, affectionate, and intelligent. But he was like a man who was doomed and hurrying his doom..." Marginal wrinkles, else very good. $2,000-3,000
