HELLMUTH VON PANNWITZ
(1898 – 1947) German lieutenant general, a cavalry officer in both world wars and Supreme Ataman of the XV SS Cossack Cavalry Corps, a recipient of the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves. He was executed in Moscow for war crimes in 1947. ‘Supreme Ataman' was the highest rank in the Cossack hierarchy and one that was traditionally reserved for the Tsar alone. Very rare war-date partly-printed D.S. ‘v. Pannwitz' 1p. 4to., Nadnevak, Apr. 20, 1944, awarding Sergeant Stefan Bock the [Croatian] Bronze Medal for Bravery for: ‘…having distinguished himself through his particular bravery and daring during the squadron's deployment near Precno, Mar. 29, 1944…'. Fold at top left corner, light wrinkling, else very good and boldly signed in purple indelible ink.
