Description:

HELEN KELLER
(1880 - 1968) American author who overcame her lack of sight, speech and hearing to write inspirational accounts of her life. Fine content T.L.S. signed with her typical pencil, 1p. 4to., New York, Apr. 3, 1952, on official letterhead for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind, Inc., to Mr. Luhrs, in part: "...The urgency with which I view the pressing needs of the world's blind people prompts me to lay before you a matter that causes me untold distress. Recently I returned home from an intensive three months tour of Africa in behalf of the blind residing there...Across the continent are to be found thousands upon thousands of blind natives who are untaught, unbefriended and unwanted. They subsist surrounded by ignorance, superstition and poverty, shunned by the strong who possess all of their senses, and there is no telling how long their state of utter destitution will continue. Such is the appalling fate of myriads of my fellows who live in backward countries throughout the globe. Yet the blind have innate ability and if they are properly trained, they can do excellent work and earn all or part of their livelihoods. For many years in progressive countries like the United States, blind men and women have been employed in business, industry and many professions...the American Foundation for Overseas Blind...has concentrated on opening up services to blind people in primitive areas through the world. Their urgent needs are schools for blind little ones, braille books and braille presses, training center sand industrial establishments for able-bodied blind adults, tools and appliances especially designed for them, and associations animated by genuine interest that will give their lives a goal...". With an original tri-fold pamphlet from the Foundation printed on green paper, and the original transmittal envelope. Fine.
