Description:

HEINRICH KARL FRICKE
(1884-1945) Also known as Enrique Carlos Fricke, a German spy serving as German consul in Cartagena from 1924 to his death. T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Munich, Mar. 9, 1938, a postcard sent to a Col. Prieser. In part: ‘...thanks for the kind lines, from which I see with sadness that you are resigning from the chairmanship...Hopefully you will now enjoy the rest of your life in peace and quiet and look forward to the further expansion of our fatherland...Mr. v. Schobert and I fought together at Vimy...'. A bit soiled throughout, not affecting the signature. Fricke had a network of spies in World War I, Spanish Civil War, and World War II, using a German school as his front. In 1937 he was expelled from Spain, but not before he managed to issue a report on the movements and plans of the Republican Navy and merchant fleet, exposing possible dams for the Kriegsmarine and placing Cartagena and its naval base as targets for aerial bombardments. This dossier resulted in the sinking of the Republican submarine C-3 by the Germans in December 1936, claiming 44 victims among a crew mostly from Cartagena.
