Description:

(1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the SS and Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremberg. Important, fine content D.S., 6pp. large 4to., "Field Headquarters", Mar. 6, 1944. Himmler approves a "vorschlag", or recommendation by Gen. Felix Steiner to award the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves to SS-Brigadefuhrer FRITZ VON SCHOLZ (1896-1944). The document, typed in a large font so that it could easily be read by Hitler, describes von Scholz's activities, actions and reactions in his support of German forces during the Narva Campaign, the retreat of German forces to the Narva River following the launch of Operation Bagration. A listing of von Scholz's earlier awards is also provided. Himmler signs the official request for the award, which is countersigned by RUDOLF SCHMUNDT (1896-1944), general and chief adjutant of the armed forces and a close friend of Hitler, mortally wounded in the July 20, 1944 bomb attempt on Hitler's life. Von Scholz himself would be killed a few months later as a result of an artillery barrage, and be awarded his Swords posthumously. A few edges tears at top margin, file holes and light even toning, else very good.
