Description:

HEINRICH HIMMLER
(1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremberg. D.S. with initials "H H", 1p. 4to., [In the field], Jan. 22, 1945 (see below). Preceding Himmler's document is a heavily-docketed retained carbon of a document, 1p. 4to., "Fuhrer Headquarters", July 30, 1944 in which JOSEF FITZTHUM is promoted to SS-Gruppenfuhrer and Generalleutnant of the Waffen-SS and Police. Signed with a stamp by MAXIMILIAN VON HERFF. The second document (which Himmler signs), is on his Reichsfuhrer-SS letterhead and states that Fitzthum would be dismissed as of a particular date which is not specified. At bottom, Himmler explains the lack of a dismissal date: "In the meantime he was mortally injured. HH 22.I.45." Very good. From October, 1943 Fitzthum has served as Himmler's personal plenipotentiary in Albania. By Oct. 2, 1944, when the Germans decided to evacuate Albania, Fitzthum was perhaps the most powerful man in the entire country. Before the withdrawal, Fitzthum helped Xhafer Deva set up, arm and equip a local administration and defence force in Kosovo. Fitzthum was posted to the 18th SS Panzergrenadier Division and died in a car accident on Jan. 10, 1945.
