HEINRICH HIMMLER CONDEMNS A JULY 20 PLOTTER
(1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremberg. HIMMLER CONDEMNS A JULY 20 BOMB PLOT CONSPIRATOR Important content T.L.S. on his 'Der Reichsfuhrer-SS' letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, Nov. 30, 1944 to SS-Obergruppenfuhrer MAXIMILIAN VON HERFF (1893-1945), a German senior SS commander who served as head of the SS Personnel Main Office from 1942 to 1945. As the Nazis continue their hunt for plotters involved in the July 20, 1944 bombing attempt on Hitler's life, Himmler reveals he has exposed one such high-ranking conspirator in the ranks of the SS. He writes, in part: '...SS-Gruppenfuhrer Arthur Nebe is hereby 1) demoted to SS-Mann and 2) expelled from the Schutzstaffel. Reason: As discovered records and state police investigations show, Nebe has for years maintained close contact with people who took part in the July 20 putsch...Through treason he supported the putschists...Nebe therefore took his oath as a man who pledged special loyalty to the Führer, and most shamefully broke that oath....' Multiple stamped and initialed dockets. File holes, with scorch marks and an interior tear at left margin caused most likely during an effort to burn this document at war's end, else very good. ARTHUR NEBE (1894–21 March 1945) became head of Nazi Germany's Criminal Police (Kriminalpolizei; Kripo) in 1936, which was amalgamated into the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) in 1939. As the commanding officer of Einsatzgruppe B in Belarus, he was responsible for over 45,000 murders and conceived the concept of 'gassing trucks'. He also selected the 'Great Escape' prisoners to be executed. In the July 20 plot against Adolf Hitler, Nebe was to lead a team of 12 policemen to kill Himmler, but the signal to act never reached him. After the failed assassination attempt, Nebe fled and went into hiding. He was arrested in January 1945 after a former mistress betrayed him. Nebe was sentenced to death by the People's Court on March 2, 1945 and was executed in Berlin at Plotzensee Prison on March 21 by being hanged with piano wire from a meat hook.
