Description:

HEINRICH AND MARGA HIMMLER
HEINRICH HIMMLER (1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremberg. Bold inscription and signature on a quarto album page, likely from a guest book, dated by him on Feb. 4, 1938. Appearing beneath Himmler's signature is that of his wife, MARGARETE HIMMLER (1893-1967). Beneath "Marga's" signature appears that of HANS JOACHIM "HAJO" VON HADELN (1910-1943), Commander I Battalion SS-Panzergrenadier-Battalion 'Westland'/SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Wiking" who was likely the Himmlers' guest. A very rare pair of signatures as the couple were rarely seen in public together. Fine. Himmler met his future wife, Margarete Boden in 1927. The blonde, blue-eyed nurse corresponded perfectly to Himmler's ideal woman. Seven years his senior, Margarete shared his interest in herbal medicine and homoeopathy, and was part owner of a small private clinic. They shared an excessive propensity for efficiency, neatness, longed for strict domesticity, and both preferred a parsimonious lifestyle. From Himmler she received a consistent diet of anti-Semitism and diatribes against Communists and Freemasons. In 1939 Himmler commenced an affair with his secretary, Hedwig Potthast, who bore him two children. Margarete, already separated, learned of the affair but chose not to divorce. Sold with a scarce full copy of the TIME magazine issue of Feb. 12, 1945 featuring an artist's impression of Himmler's portrait as the "skull" above two "crossbones". The lead story concerned the rapid advance of the Russians to the environs of Berlin.
