Description:

HEER CAVALRY OFFICER'S CAP WITH ‘LEIBHUSAREN' TRADITIONS SKULL
A rare variant of a Heer officer's ‘feldmutze alter art' crusher cap, constructed of green-gray wool with dark green wool band. The edge of the crown and the borders of the band are trimmed with sulfur-yellow wool piping, indicative on a cavalry unit. The peak displays a metallic silver embroidered eagle patch on a green wool ground, with a wreath and national tricolor patch of similar construction on the band, both hand-sewn to the cap. Between these two patches is fitted a metal ‘leibhusaren' jawless skull traditions badge, affixed to the cap with split pins through the interior lining and with built-up wool backing in the same shade as the cap. This insignia indicates regimental lineage originating from the 1st or 2nd Leibhusaren Regiments, active until World War I. The skull seen here is smaller than other identified examples, and may have originally been intended for a shoulder board. The interior of the cap is lined with orange-brown twill, with a reddish-brown faux-leather sweatband. The liner bears a diamond celluloid sweat shield, printed with the designation ‘Offizier Kleiderklasse' over ‘Berlin', over the diamond maker's label ‘Erel Sonderklasse', over the additional designation ‘Extra', all in silver ink. The cap shows three or four very small moth nips and a small, faint stain to the top of the crown, with an additional small moth nip to the underside of the crown at the rear and some additional thin patches to the wool band from moth damage. The sweatband shows a few tears and expected wear and minor soiling, while the lining shows sweat stains, with a tear to the sweat shield. Stillin very good, attractive condition overall.
