648. HEADLESS HORSEMAN OF STONES RIVER - JULIUS GARESCHE (1821-1862) Union military officer, declined a general's commission to serve as Rosecrans' chief of staff. Garesche had premonitions of his death in his first battle, and they came to fruition. Leading a charge at Stones River, a cannonball blew his head off, and his horse continued to carry his upright, headless body some distance before his horrified command. Scarce D.S. as Asst.
