Lot 648
Description:
648. HEADLESS HORSEMAN OF STONES RIVER - JULIUS GARESCHE (1821-1862) Union military officer, declined a general's commission to serve as Rosecrans' chief of staff. Garesche had premonitions of his death in his first battle, and they came to fruition. Leading a charge at Stones River, a cannonball blew his head off, and his horse continued to carry his upright, headless body some distance before his horrified command. Scarce D.S. as Asst. Adjutant General, 1p. 4to., Washington, Sep. 21, 1861 to a lieutenant in the Fifth Artillery forwarding his commission. Very good. $100-150
