Description:

744. HE FIRED THE LAST SHOT OF THE CIVIL WAR - JOHN GRIMBALL Confederate naval officer, senior watch officer on the CSS Shenandoah believed to have either ordered the last shot or actually fired the last shot of the Civil War. Concluding portion of an A.D.S. followed by a bold, full signature. Mounted. CSS Shenandoah, the former Sea King, was the last fighting force of the Confederacy, and had captured 38 Union commerce ships and burned 32 during her career. Her master, Lieutenant James Waddell, took more than 1,000 prisoners, and unknowingly, fired the last shot of the Civil War on June 22, 1865. After a three-hour pursuit on the Bering Sea in pursuit of Jerah Swift, a New Bedford fast bark, the Shenandoah fired a warning shot across the victim's bow with her 32-pounder Whitworth rifle cannon. Even after Waddell received news of the South's surrender, he refused to give up his ship, instead circumnavigating the globe to turn the vessel over to British authorities months later. $200-300
