Description:

360. RUTHERFORD B. HAYES (1822-1893) Nineteenth President of the United States and Union brigadier general. Rare signed imprint "R. B. Hayes" as President, a booklet titled "Annual Message of the President of the United States, to the Two Houses of Congress...", 34pp., 8vo., Washington, Government Printing Office, 1880, Signed at the top of the front cover: "With my compliments, R. B. Hayes". Considerably faded yet entirely legible, the only such copy we've seen. In his speech before the last Congress he would address, Hayes discussed the "silver question", unrest in South America, enlargement of the Navy, "education" of the Indians, and his hope that the government will "eradicate" the "evils" and polygamy in Utah, a direct reference to the influence of Mormonism in the state. $400 - 600
