Description:

(HAWAII)
A pair of fascinating pieces of ephemera, being two 3 1/2" x 5" swatches of rough paper fashioned from palm tree fibers recovered in Hawaii in the early 1830s. The first swatch bears a set of colored patterns and is identified on verso as "Sandwich Island Cloth." (The Sandwich Islands was the name given by Captain James Cook in 1778 for the Hawaiian Islands). The sheet bears only minor edge ear and is otherwise very good condition. The second piece bears an ink and watercolor sketch of several palm trees in various stages of life with a handwritten note at bottom: "H Paprio Siracusanso[?]" The verso is marked in ink at top: "Per Guiseppe Laliti[?]" and the date "1831" The sheet bears some significant losses that affect both the sketch and the date written on the verso, overall good condition. A very unusual item from the early years of European contact.
