GEORG ANTON SCHAFFER German physician and explorer employed by the Russian-American company, who from 1815 to 1817 attempted to conquer the Hawaiian Islands in their behalf. A.L.S. "Dr. de Schaffer", in German, 3pp. 4to., Macao, Aug. 6, 1817, Schaffer writes to an unnamed friend, congratulating him on his safe arrival in Canton. He thanks his correspondent for his friendship and favors, and hopes they will persist "wherever I shall go in this world". He also reminds his correspondent to bring him "1 [British pound]... of the largest heads of Papaver Somniferus...", better known as the opium poppy. Whether he required the flower for academic or personal purposes is unknown. Schaffer fled to Canton, and then to Macao, following his unsuccessful annexation of Hawaii. Bears folds and minor show-through, and an autobiographical notation in pencil at the bottom of the first page, else very good. Also present is an old receipt, 1p. oblong 8vo., dated 1838, giving a brief overview of the contents of the above letter, and bearing on the verso a pencil notation giving some history of the settlements and fortifications created by Schaffer on Kauai.
