Description:

HASSO VON MANTEUFFEL
(1897 - 1978) Commander of the 5th Panzer Army which spearheaded the ill-fated Ardennes offensive of January 1945. After vainly requesting more help from a vacillating Hitler, he spoke despairingly of 'a corporal's war'. Fine content T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Diessen, Sep. 8, 1968 in English responding to a request to record his most memorable event of the war. Manteuffel writes, in part: '...[t was] the storming of the very important bridge over the Volga-Moscow-Channel at Iachrome [Yakhroma], northwest of this capital by a nightly surprise attack by my regiment on Nov. 27/28 [1941].In spite of a very strong custody of this large bridge the Russians had no time to destroy the bridge! This success was a great surprise for the German High Command and for the Russians too! I have had in my hands the keys for the electric power plant of the Kremlin! But the High Command had no troops more for exploiting this success - so that we received two days later the order to evacuate and to give up the bridge-head and to destroy this bridge!...twenty miles northwest of Moscow...' Light toning along folds, else very good.
