Description:

HARRY W. GILMOR
(1838 - 1883) Confederate cavalry officer and leader of the partisans, "Gilmor's Raiders". During the Gettysburg Campaign, Gilmor commanded the 1st and 2nd Md. Cavalry under Steuart. After Monocacy on July 9, 1864, Colonel Gilmor's command made a series of raids of incredibly daring raids around Baltimore going as far east as Magnolia Station. There they proceeded to wreck two trains, one northbound and one southbound, wrecked a railroad bridge, and captured Union Gen. William B. Franklin. Gilmor was captured in February, 1865 while raiding railroads in West Virginia and held until the end of the war. Excessively rare, if not unique war date partial D.S. "H. W. Gilmor Comdg. Comp", 1p. 12mo., "Camp in Valley of Virginia", [ca. early July, 1863], a receipt issued to Confederate Quartermaster William Miller for 70,608 pounds of corn and 72,376 pounds of hay used as forage for the previous three months, boldly signed at bottom. Very fine condition, simply matted and framed. Gilmor's signature is rare in any form; war-date examples are unheard of, and certainly far rarer than those of Mosby or Morgan.
