Description:

HARRY TRUMAN
(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Fine content T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 25, 1948 to Hon. Robert Simmons, Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. Truman discusses setting pensions for congressmen: "...I appreciated very much your letter...in regard to the pension base for Congressmen. I have always been in favor of broadening that base - treating Congressmen just like we do other public servants but most of the Members of Congress are afraid to legislate for their own welfare and benefit. You remember the time we voted a pension system and then a good for nothing newspaper out in Washington caused us to throw it overboard. That shouldn't happen...". Fine. Ironically, when Truman retired, her returned to Independence with no government support or income of any kind, except for his Army pension of $112.56 a month.
