HARRY TRUMAN
(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Scarce T.L.S. "Harry" as Senator, 1p. 4to. on U.S. Senate letterhead, Washington, May 29, 1944 to Fred N. Lang concerning the possible appointment of Charles S. Thomas (1897 - 1983) as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Truman writes, in part: "...Of course if he receives the appointment I will do everything I can to get him a quick and unanimous confirmation in the Senate, but I will not of course not be consulted about the appointment..." Matted and framed together with the May 22, 1950 issue of Time featuring Truman's portrait as well as Lang's retained copy of his May 20, 1944 letter recommending Thomas to the post. Thomas, who was born in Independence, Mo. was not nominated in 1944 but he did serve as Under Secretary and later as Secretary of the Navy in the Eisenhower administration. Usual folds, else fine condition. Not examined out of frame.
