Description:

HARRY TRUMAN'S DEATH CERTIFICATE AND RECEIPTS FOR PAYMENT ON HIS LIFE INSURANCE
(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. A rare and interesting group of papers issued upon the death of Truman, the first a partly-printed receipt from the Prudential Insurance Company of America, 1p. oblong 12mo., Jan. 1973, presented to Bess Truman indicating the death benefit for her husband in the amount of $6,183.88 on "...policy No 3 895 570 on Harry S. Truman", and a second receipt, a mimeographed copy on yellow paper of an "Ordinary Policy Status Record", indicating that the death benefit had a $5,000 deductible and would be distributed in "lump" form. Along with period copies of Truman's insurance policy, 4pp. legal folio, and an official copy of Truman's death certificate embossed with the city of Kansas City seal and stamped on the verso "Health Department Bureau of Vital Statistics Kansas City, MO.". The death certificate indicates that Truman died of "Acute Renal Tubular Necrosis, Coronary Heart Disease, Congestive Heart failure" and "Shock and Generalized Arteriosclerosis" on Dec. 26, 1972. Also present is a period copy of the Prudential check issued to Bess Truman. Of course, this may be the only true death certificate in private hands, thus making this group very rare indeed.
