Description:

1058. HARRY TRUMAN 1948 "WHISTLE STOP" TOUR AGENDA Excellent printed document, 6pp. large legal folio, [n.p., n.d. but likely Washington, mid-October, 1948], the mimeographed agenda and guest list for Truman's famous second "whistle stop" tour of 1948 which ended just days before his defeat of Thomas E. Dewey. The trip visited Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, Providence, New York, St. Louis and Independence, where Truman de-trained on Oct. 31. The first three pages set forth the names of the presidential party, Secret Service agents, press and television representatives, etc., with the balance of the document giving a minute-by-minute agenda of Truman's trip. One fold, a few corner chips, else very good. When the official phase of Truman's 1948 campaign began, the president repeated the whistle stop strategy he had honed in on his trip to California in the spring. He blasted the Republicans in speech after speech, telling voters that Dewey and the GOP wanted to dismantle Roosevelt's New Deal and make America a nation by the rich and for the rich. "Give 'em hell, Harry" became the battle cry of his supporters. Meanwhile, Dewey focused on looking good, speaking in platitudes, and being inoffensive. And his strategy seemed to be working. Just days before the election, the media still gave him a big edge. Some of his aides had even bought houses in Washington, D.C., anticipating work in a Thomas Dewey White House. Yet, two days after this train trip concluded, Truman snatched victory from Dewey in a come from behind win. $250-350
