Description:

HARRY S. TRUMAN
(1884 - 1972) Thirty-third President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Fine content and association T.L.S. ‘Harry' 1p. 4to., Independence, Nov. 16, 1959, on his personal letterhead to Congressman John Wesley Snyder. In part: ‘…I was glad to have the copy of the letter from Cliff Folger. He sent me a number of Grandma Moses' pictures autographed by her and it looks now as if we will have an arrangement here to have quite a Grandma Moses display. At least I hope we will…'. Anna M. ‘Grandma' Moses (1860 - 1961) was an American artist remembered for her simple, homey painting of rural New England life. While Moses' simple, uncluttered images of idyllic scenes were at odds with much of the artistic abstraction of the 1940s and 1950s, she found an ally and deep admirer in Truman. When the two met at an awards ceremony in 1949, he reportedly told the audience that he and Moses ‘were in complete agreement over abstract ‘ham-and-egg art'. As evinced in this letter, Truman would go on to welcome paintings by Moses into the official White House collection, and, later, in his own home. John Clifford Folger (1893-1981) was the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium at the time of this letter. His relationship to Moses is not immediately clear, but as a renowned philanthropist, it stands to reason that he had an interest in the arts. Fine condition.
