Description:

An interesting grouping of seven candid photos of Truman while aboard the U.S.S. Augusta en route from the Potsdam Conference in August 1945. The photographs, taken by a sailor who was also a professional photographer, represent a total of three images. The original prints measure 5" x 4" sepia. The first shows Truman and Secretary of State John F. Byrnes chatting with the Captain James Foskett of the Augusta on the bow of ship. The photograph is accompanied by a 10" x 8" print and a smaller print as well as the original negative. The other two images show Truman with the crew, and sharing a meal with them. Interestingly, Truman was eating in the forward mess of the Augusta when he announced the bombing of Hiroshima. The third image shows Truman and Byrnes on an outer deck holding a memorial service. A fine collection of material.
