HARRY S. TRUMAN
(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the rebuilding of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Fine content T.L.S. as President, 1p. 8vo., June 29, 1946, to Carl H. Claudy (1879-1957) author and executive secretary of the Masonic Service Association, responding to a request for a message to the Grand Masonic Lodge of the Philippines. In part: '...I wish it were possible for me to comply with the cabled request of Grand Secretary Antonio Gonzalez, Grand Lodge of the Philippines Islands, for a message in connection with the inauguration of Philippine Independence. Will you be good enough to explain...that a recording of a greeting to be broadcast to the Philippines on Independence Day has been made. When the President thus officially recognizes a public event, it is not customary to send an additional message to be used under private or fraternal auspices. I am sure both you and he will understand...' Accompanied by a White House transmittal envelope, and four typed pages of biographical information on Claudy with a 4.5 x 6.5 in. b/w portrait of him. Creased and slightly toned, else fine condition. Five days later on July 4th, 1946, the U.S. officially granted independence to the Philippines in accordance with the Philippines Independence Act. Truman was a longtime member of the Masons, being initiated in 1909, elected Grand Master of the Missouri Lodge while running for Senate re-election, and honored with a 50-year award in 1959.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
