(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Rare typed D.S., 1p. 4to, a 'Citation for the Legion of Merit, Degree of Legionnaire', awarded to Soviet Colonel Mikhail Meshcheryakov of the Red Army. A Soviet Red Army hero who was awarded the title 'Hero of the Soviet Union', as well as receiving the Order of Lenin, in his own country. The Legion of Merit was awarded both to United States citizens and other foreign nationals, primarily Russians, with only 300 being awarded to Russians. It was given in this instance to Meshcheryakov for: '...exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services as Deputy Commander of the 41st Red Infantry Corps... [demonstrating] unusual ability in organizing battles...' for his actions in the Battle of Berlin. WITH the award certificate, 10 x 12 in., awarding the Legion of Merit to Meshcheryakov. Signed by Secretary of War ROBERT P. PATTERSON (1891-1952). Both are very good.
