Description:

Harry S. Truman Most important T.L.S. as Senator on Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Sep. 11, 1944 to reporter Joseph Lieb. Excellent content concerning Truman's selection, two months earlier, to be F.D.R.'s vice president. In part: ... I refused the Vice Presidency until Friday morning of the Convention when I was informed by all sections of the Party that unless I was willing to accept the nomination the Party would split, and I did not feel like taking that responsibility. I was never a candidate for the office and never wanted it... Any one who could act as a Senator would have no trouble being Vice President. In his autograph postscript he adds: Most Senators preside and know more about the rules procedures than any V. P. since Jefferson . It is true that Truman never wanted the office; he finally relented when hearing that F.D.R. had said: Tell him if he wants to break up the Democratic Party in the middle of a war, that's his responsibility . Very light edge wear, three file holes in left margin, otherwise very good. E30000-5000
