Description:

HARRY S. TRUMAN
(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. An exceptional typed D.S. as President on White House letterhead, 1p., 4to., Washington [April 9, 1946], a Citation for Legion of Merit, Degree of Legionnaire, presented to a Russian officer who distinguished himself for valor and service to the allies during World War II, in part: "...Lieutenant Colonel S.N. Kozlov, Chief of Staff, 41st Guard Infantry Division, Red Army, displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and contributed materially to the success of combined operations in Europe...". Boldly signed by Truman in black ink, accompanied by the actual Legion of Merit certificate with embossed medal in color, signed by Secretary of War ROBERT P. PATTERSON and the Adjutant General of the Army. Two pieces, fine condition. Accolades for allies flowed freely immediately after the war, but the quickly deteriorating relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union forced Truman to withhold awards such as these. A rare document!
