Description:

(1884-1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Great content T.L.S. 'H.S.T.' as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, June 9, 1947, enclosing a three-page photocopy of testimony given before a Congressional committee to his Director of the Bureau of the Budget JAMES E. WEBB. In part: '...it was handed to me by the Secretary of Labor. He was very much put out because he thought the program was not fully supported by the Budget Director... I wish you would discuss the matter with him...' Two file holes at top, tiny staple holes, else very good. The enclosed testimony (sold with this lot) mentions President Roosevelt's labor policies, and Truman adds on the back of one sheet in pencil: 'see about Handicapped persons'. The testimony could pertain to Truman's establishment of the 'President's Committee on National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week', an initiative first instituted by Roosevelt in 1945 to enlist support for the employment of physically handicapped workers yet reorganized under a presidential committee under Truman in 1947. Warrants further research.
