Description:

Original printed broadside, 8" x 13", a "Wanted" poster released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, dated Nov. 16, 1936 and seeking information related to bank robbers HARRY BRUNETTE (1911-1972) and his partner, Merle Vandenbush, on charges of "Kidnaping" [sic] and bank robbery. The poster presents three mugshots of Brunette and two of Vandenbush, listing their known aliases and physical traits beneath. At bottom is printed a description of their known crimes, including bank robberies in Wisconsin and the kidnapping of a New Jersey State Trooper. The broadside is signed in type at bottom by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, with the addresses and phone numbers of the FBI's field offices on the verso. Shows original mailing folds, else very good. Brunette was arrested in New York City in December of 1936, following a botched raid in which federal agents led personally by Hoover and his second-in-command Clyde Tolson stormed Brunette's apartment fourteen hours early, to the confusion of the NYPD officers in support. Gas grenades were used to subdue the resisting Brunette, but started a fire which allowed Vandenbush to escape in the confusion. He would not be found until two months later.
