Description:

299. WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON Bold signature "W. H. Harrison" on a 2 1/4" x 1/2" slip of vellum cut from a document. Now the intriguing part: the signature is a near perfect match with Harrison's signature as President. It is on vellum, and we have never seen Harrison's signature on any other medium but paper. The signature is mounted on a 6" x 2 1/2" piece of an album page which bears a ca. 1850 handwritten description: "As President. United States. March 4th to April 4th 1841". At top is a small pencil notation, undoubtedly a price: "350.00". In our opinion, the signature is of period ink and undoubtedly authentic. Additionally, it would take a most enterprising and talented forger to even approximate the handwriting and use the punctuation present in the description beneath the signature. Nevertheless, to use a much-tired expression: "It is what it is!". $500
