Description:

HANS LISKA SKETCHBOOK
‘Hans Liska' (Reichenbach: Carl Werner, 1944), 68pp. oblong 4to., brown boards with a printed dedication by German combat HANS LISKA (1907-1983) on the first free endpaper. This volume features reproductions of sketches and colored illustrations of the War as seen through German eyes. Images include: views of ground combat in Sevastopol, the aftermath of the British raid on Dieppe, engineers advancing in a machinegun-armed rowboat, flamethrowers in action, German railroad guns and armored trains, mechanized infantry, ruined French towns, French refugees, and more. An ink inscription in an unidentified hand penned at top right of the first free end paper, dated 1944. Boards bear soiling at edges and other light wear consistent with age, while interior pages bear light toning. A fascinating, if idealized view of the war that reflects a level of humanity and emotion not often seen.
