Description:

(1898 – 1945) German general of infantry who served in the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht. He served as the last Chief of Staff of the OKH during the final phase of the war and tried to open surrender negotiations with the Red Army; he committed suicide in the Führerbunker during the early hours of 2 May 1945. Fine association war-date T.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Nov. 25, 1943 to RUDOLF-CHRISTOFF FREIHERR VON GERSDORFF (1905–1980) German army officer and Knights Cross recipient who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler by suicide bombing on 21 March 1943 but failed when Hitler left before the bombs could be detonated. Krebs thanks his friend for his long letter and congratulates him for an award he has received. He states that he has been pleased to work with Gersdorff, and would happily do so again if "...the military road brings us together again..." and further instructs that Gersdorff is not to return back to service under Krebs until doctors certify him as completely recovered. Lightly toned, else fine.
