Description:

HANS H. LAMMERS (SELECTING STOLEN ART FOR HITLER'S APPROVAL)
(1879-1962) Minister and Chief of the Reich Chancellery, ordered arrested by Hitler in the final days, and ultimately sentenced to twenty years imprisonment for war crimes. Fine content T.L.S. on ‘Der Reichminister und Chef der Reichskanzlei' letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, May 4, 1939, to JOSEF BURCKEL (1895-1944), Gauleiter of Vienna who promoted anti-Jewish decrees and seized Jewish property. His extravagant lifestyle was financed through confiscated Jewish money and property earned him the displeasure of the Nazi hierarchy, and he was eventually removed from his post in Vienna. Not completely translated but Lammers references the fact that Hitler will make a decision as to the final disposition of artworks seized in Austria (presumably from Jews) which will likely be distributed to smaller museums in Austria. He states an art dealer named Haberstock will sort through the materials and appraise their value. File holes at the left margin, docketed, else very good. KARL HABERSTOCK (1878-1956) was a Berlin art dealer who trafficked in Nazi-looted art. Haberstock's name appears 60 times in the Art Looting Investigation Unit (ALIU) Reports 1945–1946 and ALIU Red Flag Names List and Index.
