Description:

HANS FRITZSCHE
(1900 - 1953) Radio propaganda chief in Joseph Goebbels' propaganda ministry. Delivered regular radio broadcasts with the familiar opening 'Hier spricht Hans Fritzsche!', making him one of the best-known commentators in Nazi Germany. Fine content autobiographical A.D.S. signed at beginning and end, in pencil, 9pp. 8 x 13 in., [n.p., n.d. but almost certainly Nuremberg, 1946] a detailed accounting of his family life, education, and career until 1924. Likely prepared for use by his attorneys, Fritzsche writes his story, in part: '...I was born on 21.4.1900, in Bochum, as the youngest of four children of Wilhelm Fritzsche, a Post Office employee...My mother was an old Catholic; my father and the children Protestants. My father was a correct official in the senior grade...He took more pains over the moral than the material upbringing of his children. My mother was intellectually more active and of a more naturally open disposition. We children clung to her with particular love. Our adoration even increased as we got older...her surprisingly wide, private charitable work...An important point for my development was the fact that, in my four school years in Breslau...Jews...shut themselves off completely from our youthful comradeship, and from
the sphere of permitted, or forbidden, reciprocal assistance which boys give each other [cheating?]. So two distinct groups came into being...In spite of that, my best friend was a Jew, Levisohn, who became a Protestant and who influenced me strongly on the theological side. Then, one morning, war broke out. My next best friend, Bohse, was likewise a Jew. On my advice, he together with his mother and sister, became Protestants...' Toned a bit, a few pages holed at top, else very good. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
