HANS FRITZSCHE SUBPOENAS PRESS ACCOUNTS OF 'GERMAN ATROCITIES'
HANS FRITZSCHE (1900-1953) Radio propaganda chief in Joseph Goebbels' propaganda ministry. Delivered regular radio broadcasts with the familiar opening 'Hier spricht Hans Fritzsche!', making him one of the best-known commentators in Nazi Germany. Fine content partly-printed D.S. 'Hans Fritzsche' in pencil, 1p. legal folio, Nuremberg, Dec. 12, 1945, a submission to the International Military Tribunal, a 'Defendant's Application for Document' for use in his defense. Fritzsche requests 'Archives of the report 'Deutscher Schnelldienst' of the department 'Deutsche Presse' in the Reich Ministry of Propaganda...In the basement of the Reich Ministry of Propaganda...[which] should have come into the custody of the Russian military authorities after the occupation of Berlin...' He further notes: 'Before and during the war, the defendant FRITZSCHE, through his employees and through proper- authorities, has examined each report of German atrocities, murders and war crimes that came from abroad. The official communication to each such request is in the archives...The above-mentioned official communication always stated that, either nothing has happened, or that the claim, according to international law, has legal facts at its basis. These facts are important in examining the deeds of which the defendant FRITZSCHE has been accused...' Also signed by Fritzsche's lead defense attorney, Dr. HEINZ FRITZ. Mounted to heavy stock, sold with an official translation of the document, which is also mounted. Very good.
This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
