Description:

(1809 - 1891) Vice President of the United States under Abraham Lincoln and a prominent abolitionist. Good association A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Bangor, Nov. 7, 1862, a letter of congratulations to U.S. Senator SOLOMON FOOT during Hamlin's tenure as Vice President. In part: 'Allow me to congratulate you...on your almost unanimous re-election...I desire to be in Washington...at the commencement of the Ses of Cong...I will glad to know certainly that you will be there, so I may delay a week or ten days in case I shall desire to do so...' Foot served as the Senate's President pro tempore from 1861 to 1864, thus Hamlin is attempting to ensure that Foot can preside over the Senate in case he decides to furlough his trip to the Capitol. Hamlin was frequent absent from the chamber during the Civil War years, leaving Foot to preside over the Senate for much of the conflict. An individual, perhaps Foot's aide or the Senator himself, dockets 'H. Hamlin' on the verso. Some folds, else fine.
