Description:

HANDPAINTED CHINESE SCROLL DEPICTING GUAN YU
Expertly executed watercolor painting, 47" x 24", mounted to a silk-covered cloth scroll, 81" x 28 1/2", a depiction of GUAN YU (d. 220), a general of the Three Kingdoms period, who has been enshrined in Chinese culture as a symbol of loyalty and righteousness. He is shown seated at his desk, flanked by his son and his brother, Zhang Fei. Beneath these figures is an even larger full-frontal depiction of Caishen, the Chinese god of wealth and prosperity, seated on a throne, flanked again by Zhang Fei and two other figures. Guan Yu and Caishen are frequently displayed in Chinese households as protective figures. The scroll is strengthened at the top and bottom edges by wooden rods, and features cloth loops for hanging and tying at the top. Unsigned, some toning, else very good.
