54. WADE HAMPTON (1819-1902) Confederate lieutenant general of cavalry whose daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg won him fame in both North and South. Scarce war date A.L. (unsigned) 2pp. 8vo., Richmond, May 25, 1862 two days following his promotion to brigadier general. He writes in part: "I have but a moment in which to write to you before going out to attack the enemy. My brigade is ordered to lead & I hope it will prove itself worthy of the of the position...I have done my duty as a soldier & none of my name need be ashamed of me..." Several days later, Hampton would be severely wounded leading his brigade at Fair Oaks. Usual folds, else fine. $1,000-1,500
