Description:

(HAMILTON-BURR DUEL) CHARLES D. COOPER
(1769-1831) Democratic-Republican politician, author of the letter which precipitated the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, resulting in the latter''s death. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 6 1/4" x 2 3/4", Albany, Sep. 1, 1830, a check from the Cashier of the New York State Bank, paying twenty-nine dollars and sixty-eight cents to a J. Francis. The check is completed entirely in Cooper''s hand, and signed by him at lower right in black ink. The check is indented at the top and left edge, with a cross-shaped cancellation punch affecting the middles initial and first letter of the surname in the signature. In February of 1804, Cooper attended a dinner party at which Hamilton forcefully argued against the nomination of Burr as the Federalist candidate for Governor of New York. Cooper transmitted Hamilton''s "despicable opinion" in a letter to Hamilton''s father-in-law, Philip Schuyler, which was later published in the "Albany Register". Despite being a good deal tamer than many other attacks against Burr in the press, Burr was enraged by its content and initiated a long series of angry correspondence with Hamilton, culminating in the duel between the two at Weehawken, New Jersey on July 11, 1804, resulting in Hamilton''s death. Also present is a 4to. sheet, bearing a typed description of Cooper''s relevance to the Hamilton-Burr duel.
