HAMBURG MASSACRE OF BLACKS IMPRINT
Rare imprint, 166p. 8vo. (uncut), [n.p.], 1876, headed: "A CENTENNIAL FOURTH OF JULY DEMOCRATIC CELEBRATION The Massacre of Six Colored Citizens of the United States at Hamburgh, S.C., on July 4, 1876 Debate of the Hamburg Massacre, in the U.S. House of Representatives, July 15th and 16th, 1876". This document, obviously published by a pro-Republican organization, prints the text of the angry debate between representatives of South Carolina, Georgia, New York and other states concerning the "Hamburgh Massacre". Heated accusations flew thick, with ex-CSA Gen. Mathew C. Butler being accused of an affiliation with the KKK, the New York delegation compared with the Tammany bosses, accusations of mistreatment of black voters, etc. Also included in the printing is an eyewitness account of the attack, various reports, etc. The Hamburg Massacre (or Hamburg Riot) was a key event of South Carolina Reconstruction. Beginning with a dispute over free passage on a public road, this racially motivated incident concluded with the death of seven men. It launched the furious 1876 Democratic campaign for South Carolina's redemption, leading to nearly a century of "Jim Crow" denial of civil rights to Blacks.
