Description:

(1925 - 1981) Pioneer American pop singer, his "Rock Around the Clock" set the pace for the advent of rock and roll. Extraordinary manuscript L.S. "William J. C. Haley", 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d., ca. 1975], an angry letter to an unknown party complaining about his long-term booking agent, Jolly Joyce. In part: "...Joyce states that he went to great personal expense to service us in South America...All travel...was paid for by Mr. Valdes. We paid for all of Mr. Joyce's hotel bills...Mr. Joyce continually sought to sell other attractions. Mr. Joyce also claims he went to great personal expense to tour Europe with us. While associated with Mr. Joyce we never worked in Europe...While in the British Isles Bill Haley and the Comets paid all the hotel bills for Mr. Joyce...Mr. Joyce never did any disc jockey promotion...Mr. Joyce's efforts were directed directly to advertising his own booking agency. The expense of record promotion was always paid by us..." Boldly signed by Haley at conclusion also signed by fellow band members JOHN A. "JOHNNY" GRANDE and WILLIAM A. "BILLY" WILLIAMSON. Joyce was Bill Haley and the Comets booking agent from April, 1950 until the mid-1970's when Joyce sued Haley for breach of contract. This letter from Haley was undoubtedly used by Haley as his rationale for reneging upon his agreement with Joyce.
