Description:

HADRIAN ROMAN BRIDGE RELIC
An interesting relic, a two-piece thin finished dark wood box bearing a silver shield-shaped plaque engraved: 'Part of Roman Bridge erected across the Tyne by Hadrian A.D. 120' The circular box measures 2.25 in. across and is about 1.4 in. deep. Near fine condition. The wood is most likely from Chesters Bridge, a Roman bridge over the River North Tyne at Chollerford, Northumberland, England, and adjacent to the Roman fort of Cilurnum on Hadrian's Wall. The bridge carried the Military Way Roman road behind the wall across the river at this point and was defended by the adjacent cavalry fort at its foundation, later given over to infantry. The remains of the bridge were first located in 1860. This relic was probably preserved by John Clayton, an antiquarian who owned the property upon which the fort and bridge were located. One should note that timbers believed to be foundations of the Roman bridge were found when the swing bridge was built in 1872. Some of these were actually medieval, from the famous 13th-century bridge here – but a radiocarbon date obtained from one timber pile now proves that the Roman bridge was on the same site as the medieval and the swing bridges. Sold as is.
