Description:

H.M.S. AJAX CAPTAIN'S MAP OF THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE
Original map depicting the Battle of the River Plate, 37 x 29 in. coated linen map fabric, prepared by Capt. Douglas H. Everett, commander of the H.M.S. AJAX only days after the December 13, 1939 engagement. The map was apparently intended for submission with his report on the battle submitted to Admiral Henry Harwood, Commander of the South America Division, on December 31, 1939, wherein such a map is mentioned. The map is labeled: 'Track Chart of Action Between H.M. Ships 'AJAX', 'ACHILLES' and 'EXETER' and 'ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE' Off the River Plate on 13 December 1939' The course of all four warships are traced in different colors, and often annotated with significant events, including when vessels opened fire, changes in speed, etc. ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE also turned to offer broadsides at least twice, and her course shows those turns as well. The dogged pursuit of the ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE by the British cruisers is entirely evident as one regards Everett's map. A historic work, completed just two weeks after the climactic engagement and scuttling of the GRAF SPEE off Montevideo. Original folds very lightly toned, else fine.
