Description:

H.M.S. AJAX CAPTAIN'S LOG OF THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE
Historic content carbon copy of a report prepared by Capt. Douglas H. Everett, commander of the H.M.S. AJAX on December 21, 1939 - only days after the December 13, 1939 battle at the mouth of the Plate between three British cruisers and the German pocket battleship ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE. The document, 16pp. 15.5 x 13 in. on British Admiralty letterhead, was prepared by Everett aboard the AJAX for submission to Admiral Henry Harwood, Commander of the South America Division. This document, titled 'ENGAGEMENT WITH GERMAN ARMOURED SHIP ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE', is a minute-be-minute chronology of the battle from 0612 on December 13th to 0148 the following day. Every entry includes the local (military) time, observations (often including the course steered by the AJAX, making smoke, aircraft movements, etc.), and important communications. Comments include: '...Enemy opened fire...Ajax straddled again...Flash from Exeter...Making much smoke...Torpedo track sighted...Ajax increased to 28 knots...Ajax fire in X gun house...' Much more, and particularly interesting when tying ship course and action to radio communications. Two old paperclip stains, light scattered foxing, else very good.
