Description:

GUNTHER RALL
(1918-2009) German fighter pilot during World War II and the third most successful fighter ace in history of aerial warfare. He claimed all of his victories in the Bf 109. Limited-edition print numbered ‘233/1000' by artist Michael Wooten who signs at the bottom right. The print shows Rall in uniform from the chest up with an ME 109 in the background. Rall signs at the bottom center just beneath his image. A nice presentation piece accompanied by a newspaper clipping detailing his exploits, affixed to the top right, a printed cut out of an 1939 EK1 is pasted center top. At the bottom left, also within the frame, is a color S.P. of Rall, again in uniform and from the chest, up. The bottom right bears an original single Luftwaffe flight collar tab, identified as Rall's in the accompanying paperwork, which also describes some other personal medals and insignia that had at one time been part of this grouping, but unfortunately have been long since been parsed out. Presented in a 22 x 18 in. wooden frame. Accompanied by an email between our consignor and the original owner serving as provenance for this item and others seen elsewhere in this sale. In part: '...What is it that I could part with...Besides the Galland Pilot badge, and all that I described previously, I believe it's time to offer the Guenther Rall material... his major's silver bullion on yellow gold collar tab, with related documentation...included with the framed portrait of this leading ace, signed by him...I also have a framed portrait of Erich Hartmann, with a rare matched set of Captain's collar tabs attributed to him. also a first day cover with his autograph and that of Guenther Rall and two other leading Luftwaffe aces...This next offering is really difficult to put out there...the only display I have ever seen or heard of honoring...Erich Hartmann...Gerhard Barkhorn...and Adolf Galland...All this is a red, white and black, triple matted layout...' That particular triple matted piece, is also offered else where in this auction.
