Description:

Most unusual figurative cigar cutter, 5" tall, 2 1/2"dia. at the base, in the form of a miniature ship's engine order telegraph in brass with an articulated handle and speed readings on the dial. Each side of the telegraph face features a hole into which the tip of a cigar can be inserted; when actuated, the handle rotates a blade which then slices off the inserted tip. The round base of the item bears a silver presentation plaque reading "Admiral G. Lutjens" between sets of fouled anchors, indicating presentation to Kriegsmarine admiral GUNTHER LUTJENS (1889-1941), commander of the battleship BISMARCK, who went down with his ship when it was sunk by Royal Navy forces. The bottom of the piece features a hinged plate allowing the inner compartment to be emptied, maker-marked "Eingetr. Schutzm. 'Elzit'". The piece shows patination overall, with the bottom plate slightly loose and some minor oxidation to the cutting blades, else very good.
