GUNTER KUHNKE
(1912–1990) German submarine commander during World War II and later a Konteradmiral with the Bundesmarine. Kuhnke commanded the U-28, U-125 and U-853, sinking eleven ships on nine patrols, for a total of 42,252 GRT. He commanded 10th U-boat Flotilla from January 1942 until October 1944, then 33rd U-boat Flotilla until May 1945. A recipient of the Knight's Cross. Fine content war-date manuscript L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], July 5, 1944 to a 'Herr Gottschalk', a letter of condolence to a sailor's father. In part: '...It fills me with sincere [?] to have to tell you that our hope for a sign of life from your dear son is not fulfilled...the commander and 6 sailors...are in American captivity, while the entire remaining crew met a hero's death...about the last hard fight of the fort[?] we can only find out after the return of the survivors because, for military reasons, the [?] does not allow access of this kind to pass through censorship...your son...gave his life to his fatherland in fulfillment of his military duty as an exemplary fighter, and you, dear Herr Gottschalk, sacrificed your loved one for the greatness and future of our people...words are too weak to give you real meaning in your suffering...'
