Description:

GROVER CLEVELAND
(1837 - 1908) 22nd and 24th President of the United States, supported civil service and fiscal reform. Fine content A.L.S. as Mayor of Buffalo, 2pp. 4to., Buffalo, Oct. 5, 1882 to James Moon, Esq. in New York discussing his prospects of winning the governorship of New York in November. In full: "Bissel [his law partner] showed me your letter of yesterday. What should I say to you? I'll tell you what it is: if my candidacy should stop here; if I should be buried deeply by an adverse majority on the 7th of Nov., and if after that time every man in the State should kick -- that is, should kick me, the manifestations of kindness and affection which I have already received would more than compensate for all. I can say no more than this. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. I don't have much time to play 66 now. Nearly the last game I played was at the Syracuse [Democratic State] Convention, when 66 was the number of votes I received in the first ballot. When it was announced, I am told, someone cried out: 'The old man can play that'". Cleveland had little to worry about: although he had emerged as a compromise candidate at the Syracuse Convention, he won the gubernatorial race by a landslide. Cleveland trounced his nearest opponent by nearly 200,000 votes, the largest margin in the state's history to that time. Usual folds, else very good condition.
